The Shooting Star (Dodecatheon pulchellum) is aptly named. The first time I saw one I was awestruck that such a flower existed. This one was found on the trail to East Zigzag Mountain in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Every time I see these flowers I still get a sense of surprise, that there is something this beautiful waiting for us to discover it on a walk in the high country. It's very much like the feeling that comes when I lie awake at night in camp and see a shooting star race across the sky.
